Quick Answer
A factory audit is done before ordering or during a partnership to assess whether the factory itself is capable and well managed, including its quality system, food safety, and labor and environmental conditions. A product inspection checks a specific batch by sampling quantity, appearance, specifications and packaging during production or before shipment. Inspection sampling usually follows the AQL (Acceptance Quality Limit) plans in ISO 2859-1. They serve different purposes: audits reduce the risk of choosing the wrong factory, and inspections reduce the risk of a bad shipment.

Factory Audit vs Product Inspection
| Comparison | Factory audit | Product inspection |
|---|---|---|
| What is checked | The factory’s systems, equipment, people and management | The goods in a specific order |
| When | When onboarding a new supplier and at regular reviews | Before, during and after production and at container loading |
| Purpose | Can the factory supply reliably over the long term? | Can this batch be shipped? |
| Common basis | Quality system, food safety and social responsibility standards | ISO 2859-1 AQL sampling, buyer’s specification |
| Outcome | Audit report and corrective actions | Inspection report: accept or reject |
3 Types of Factory Audit
1. Quality management system audit
Checks whether the factory has a stable quality system, including incoming material inspection, process control, finished product inspection and handling of nonconforming products.
2. Food safety audit
Especially important for food and ingredient factories. It usually confirms food safety certifications such as HACCP, ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000, plus hygiene, traceability and allergen management. For example, Tang Sugar’s partner factories hold ISO 22000 (SGS verified), FSSC 22000 and HACCP certification.
3. Social responsibility audit
Checks labor conditions, occupational health and safety, environment and business ethics. Common schemes include Sedex’s SMETA (described by Sedex as the world’s most widely used social audit) and amfori BSCI. Note that amfori states that amfori BSCI is not a certification but a risk-based, continuous improvement audit system that does not give suppliers a pass/fail result.
Factory Audit Process
- Set the audit standard: decide whether to cover quality, food safety or social responsibility based on product and target market.
- Desk review: business registration, certificates, capacity, key customers, test reports.
- On-site audit: tour production lines and warehouses, interview staff and check records.
- Report: list conforming items and items needing improvement.
- Follow-up: confirm corrective actions are completed on time.
4 Stages of Product Inspection
| Stage | Common name | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Before production | Pre-production inspection | Raw materials, packaging and samples match the specification |
| During production | During production inspection | Catch process problems early and correct them |
| Before shipment | Pre-shipment inspection | Quantity, appearance, function, packaging and labeling of finished goods |
| At loading | Container loading check | Quantity, loading method and container condition |
What Is AQL Inspection?
AQL (Acceptance Quality Limit) is the standard used for sampling inspection. The international standard ISO 2859-1 (sampling schemes indexed by AQL for lot-by-lot inspection) sets how many samples to take for a given lot size and how many defects are allowed before acceptance or rejection at a given AQL.
In practice, buyer and seller agree in the contract on:
- The inspection level (which determines the sample size)
- The AQL for each defect class (for example critical, major and minor)
- What happens on failure (rework, 100% inspection, rejection or a discount)
There is no single right AQL value; it depends on product risk and buyer requirements, and it must be written into the contract or inspection specification in advance.
What Is Third-Party Inspection?
Third-party inspection means an independent inspection company other than the buyer or seller carries out the audit or inspection. It is neutral, uses standardized reports and can inspect on the buyer’s behalf when the buyer can’t be there. When using one, check:
- Whether the inspector’s qualifications and experience cover your product
- Whether the inspection specification is complete (photos, dimensions, packaging, labeling)
- Whether the report includes photos and sampling records

FAQ
What is the difference between a factory audit and a product inspection?
A factory audit evaluates the factory’s systems and capability to decide whether to work with it long term; a product inspection checks a specific batch’s quantity, appearance, specifications and packaging to decide whether it can ship.
What is AQL?
AQL is the Acceptance Quality Limit. Inspection sampling usually follows ISO 2859-1 plans to set the sample size and the number of defects allowed before acceptance or rejection; the actual values are agreed between buyer and seller.
What should a food factory audit cover?
Besides quality management, food factories should be checked for food safety management, such as HACCP, ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 certification, plus hygiene, traceability and allergen management.
Is amfori BSCI a certification?
No. amfori states that amfori BSCI is not a certification but a risk-based social responsibility audit system focused on continuous improvement.
What are the steps of a factory audit?
Typically five: set the audit standard, desk review, on-site audit, report, and follow-up on corrective actions.
How much does a factory audit cost?
It depends on the third-party company, the audit type (quality, social responsibility, food safety), the factory location and the number of days. Ask inspection companies for a quote.
